Meteors - Who's sending them?

Post by Unthinking_Pain » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:58 pm

I did try searching but found nothing useful. Since the Meteor random encounter clearly has some sort of intelligence driving the event, has there been any indication as to who or what's behind a swarm of meteors all targeting a single planet at the same time?

I dunno, they could be random but they sure are frustrating, and would make a cheap weapon... relatively speaking. I doubt anyone will assign blame to them or anything like that.
I kind of wish that systems with gas giants did not get meteor storms in them, because, well, bigger grav well nearby.

They can't be random. That's kinda the point of my question.

Could be junk from the system killer. Morrigi have the gravity tech to move that many asteroids as well, but I don't see them throwing rocks at people given the other options they have. The Zuul are nutty enough to do so as well, but if they did I would imagine they would throw the rocks into a freshly drilled nod-line and they would just appear in the target system at a high velocity, like a giant space rock shotgun.

Someone who does not wish to be seen to interfere.

Huh, I always thought they were random...

There's like literally 0 random way 15-20 astronomical bodies converge on a planet simultaneously. I figure my scientists would be freaking out trying to figure out what's up.

Whoever is sending them, I doubt it's an attack. They're rather ineffectual to be a deliberate assault from some shadowy concealed mastermind. And anyway, players have always seen them as a great boon for the resources they grant. I'll bet that's exactly why they're sent, they're a donation from some magnanimous, anonymous force that's really just trying to help. It's just they only know how to help in a somewhat misguided, fiery-apocalypse-from-the-skies-if-you-don't-catch-them sort of way.

I think this supports my shadowy manipulators as the next race theory ;p

Shit, there sure are a lot of shadowy manipulators in one galaxy. Do they attend the same conference or something?

A lot? Who/what qualifies as a shadowy manipulator in your view?

Just curious. I would consider almost all of the forces at work in the SotSverse to be refreshingly unsubtle.

Given that the showers are inconsequential when players are prepared for them, perhaps this is the work of an entity that is not malicious, but merely bored?

Not sure about whether there's a shadowy manipulator. I just wanted to know who to send the Thank You card for all the free resources!

Or something accidentally "bumping" into the system with their version of FTL..?
